If you’re looking for a list of recent movies, this is a good place to start. I’ve compiled a selection of films ranging from horror to gross-out humor, and you’ll find these motion pictures playing everywhere from art house cinemas to your local multiplex.
The Social Network - One of the most successful of all recent movies, The Social Network mixes fact and fiction to tell the story of Mark Zuckerberg (Jesse Eisenberg), the billionaire founder of Facebook. Directed by David Fincher.
Life as We Know It - Katherine Heigl and Josh Duhamel star in this romantic comedy about a mismatched pair who are forced to live together and raise their mutual goddaughter following a car crash that killed their best friends.
Red - Bruce Willis is a former government agent who’s being chased by assassins. In order to set things right, he teams up with his old colleagues (including Morgan Freeman, Helen Mirren, and John Malkovich). Based on a comic book mini-series.
Jackass 3D - Johnny Knoxville and his pals take part in a number of outrageous pranks and stunts. Don’t see this one on a full stomach, especially the scene where a man is catapulted into the air inside a full port-a-potty.
Paranormal Activity 2 - Set before and after the 2009 indie hit about a demon terrorizing a young couple, Paranormal Activity 2 offers new insight into the first film and presents even more thrills and chills.
Saw 3D - The final film of the long-running horror series finds a whole new batch of people forced to participate in lethal games set up by the twisted Jigsaw (Costas Mandylor). A number of revelations will come to light, and hardcore fans will be thrilled by appearances from Dr. Lawrence Gordon (Cary Elwes) and the original Jigsaw Killer (Tobin Bell). Not for the squeamish.
Secretariat - An inspirational Walt Disney film about the real-life racehorse and his never-say-die owner (Diane Lane). Also starring John Malkovich.
My Soul to Take - Horror legend Wes Craven wrote and directed this new release movie about a reincarnated serial killer stalking a group of teens.
Let Me In - Based on the Swedish film Let the Right One In (which was adapted from a book by John Ajvide Lindqvist), this dark horror flick revolves around a bullied 12-year-old (Kodi Smit-McPhee) who befriends his new neighbor (Chloe Moretz), a girl who appears to be his own age. As it turns out, she’s actually an ancient vampire, and their relationship becomes increasingly unwholesome and terrifying.
The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets’ Nest - A Swedish thriller that marks the third and final film about an intrepid journalist (Michael Nyqvist) and an eccentric female hacker (Noomi Rapace). An international sensation, it was adapted from the best-selling books by Stieg Larsson.
