Brian De Palma Movies
Brian De Palma is one of my favorite directors, so I'm working on a series of hubs where I review Brian De Palma movies. I've found most of his movies available on DVD or on Netflix instant view. Some of the titles below I'd never heard of it until I started this project.
Brian De Palma is best known for his thriller and suspense films, although his gangster movies are also well known. Over the last 40 years, he has directed 27 movies, making him a reasonably prolific director, but certainly no Woody Allen. He's also well known for using some actors over and over again and helping to foster their careers; Robert Deniro is probably the best example of this.
This hub is a work in progress, and I'll expand it quite a bit soon. For now, here's as complete a list of Brian De Palma movies as I could come up with, in chronological order:
- The Wedding Party - Brian De Palma co-directed this farce about a groom getting ready for his wedding. This was Robert Deniro's first movie.
- Murder a la Mod - A 1968 movie that was both written and directed by Brian De Palma. At one time it was thought to have been lost.
- Greetings - Another Robert Deniro vehicle. The character he plays here is the same character he plays in Hi, Mom!
- Hi, Mom! - An homage to Rear Window, starring Robert Deniro.
- Get to Know Your Rabbit - A 1972 comedy that's a departure from Brian De Palma's usual suspense and thriller films.
- Sisters - A 1973 psychological thriller that's heavily influenced by Brian De Palma's love of Alfred Hitchcock. Semi-retired Bernard Hermann did the score.
- Phantom of the Paradise - A musical that's written and directed by Brian De Palma. It has a cult following.
- Obsession - Paul Schrader wrote the screenplay, and Bernard Hermann, the score. Another thriller.
- Carrie - Yep, this is the Sissy Spacek vehicle based on the Stephen King novel by the same name. It's still a classic horror film, and it makes me wish that Brian De Palma would direct more horror movies.
- The Fury - A fun thriller with some paranormal aspects that stars Kirk Douglas.
- Home Movies - A 1980 film starring Kirk Douglas. (He appears in the earlier movie The Fury as well.)
- Dressed to Kill - An erotic thriller that co-stars Michael Caine and Angie Dickenson.
- Blow Out - An early movie appearance by John Travolta. John Lithgow co-stars.
- Scarface - Written by Oliver Stone and starring Al Pacino. This one was dedicated to Howard Hawks, who directed the 1932 original.
- Body Double - Another Alfred Hitchcock influenced thriller, this one stars Melanie Griffith.
- Wise Guys - Danny Devito and Joe Piscopo star.
- The Untouchables - I can't even count how many times I've seen this film. What a great cast too: Sean Connery, Kevin Costner, and Robert Deniro, among others.
- Casualties of War - Sean Penn and Michael J. Fox star.
- The Bonfire of the Vanities - Tom Hanks and Melanie Griffith co-star in this adaptation fo the Tom Wolfe novel.
- Raising Cain - See Brian De Palma Movies: Raising Cain for my review.
- Carlito's Way - I just watched this one with my wife last week, so my review is coming very soon. LOVED it.
- Mission Impossible - The big screen remake of the television show. The movie stars Tom Cruise, and it's well-made.
- Snake Eyes - A Nicholas Cage vehicle.
- Mission to Mars -
- Femme Fatale - Stars Rebeeca Romijn Stamos.
- The Black Dahlia
- Redacted
This Brian De Palma movies hub has quite a bit of content that needs to be added, and it will get added soon. It will be constantly expanding, in fact.
